… Says Varsity Will Work To Mitigate Impact On Parents
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Akoka, Prof. Folashade Ogunsola has revealed reasons the fee hike in the university is inevitable.
The Vice-Chancellor at a press briefing at the weekend said the fees increase became necessary as the fund from the government is not enough to run the university.
According to her, the bill the university is running is so high and in order to give quality education and as well produce students who can compete anywhere in the world, there is the need to get more fund to run the affairs of the university.

It would be recalled that during the week a student solidarity group staged a protest against the fee hike in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students.
The bills she said include electricity bills which the university recognized as critical for studying. “I will say we are the most energized university because we are internet and data driven.
“We are very deliberate about this because as it is in the world now, it is important our students are competitive and we must give them quality education to achieve this.
She added that the university also run bills on students’ results verification which cost between N3, 500 to N5000 per student; N8 million per year for examination; N100million to N200, 000 million for programme accreditation.
“We also have to repair the hostels because they are degrading and we need to do a major repair which will cost over N100 million.
She added that the university do the repair every year yet the halls need some major repairs and looking at these bills and more that she did not mentioned by the time they are done the fees paid by students don’t even cover the coat.
She added that aside the annual funding from the government which is not enough, the University’s IGR is still helping to subsidized what the students was charged.
Saying that the university management knows the plight of indigent students, the VC said the university will continue to work on improving their ability to mitigate the impact on students, staff and parents.
“We have the work/study programme and which we have presently increased from N200 per hour to N500 to N1000 per hour.
“There is also endowment scholarship for students and as well as instalment payment too, among others.
“We are aware of the plight of the children of the poor but it is important they have quality education and this must be paid for directly or indirectly,” she said.
