The Vice Chancellor, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has urged newly admitted students of the 2024 Modular Sandwich Programme to shun deviant behaviours that could truncate their academic career.
The Vice Chancellor represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Adenike Boyo also advised them to embrace self-discipline, imbibe qualities of a truly educated person and avail themselves of all the opportunities that the university provides for them to succeed.
She stated this at the matriculation ceremony for the students held at the university on Friday.
According to her, the university takes pride in training students for life. “We are focused on character development of our students for life. This is based on the hope that when you graduate, you will contribute meaningfully to develop mental discourses around the globe.

She said: “Our objective at the Lagos State University is to produce graduates who will be catalyst to the process of transformation of the state to a greater Lagos.
Stating that the welfare of the students is their priority, Prof Olatunji-Bello said that the management and staff of the university will ensure that the academic and learning environment is conducive, she said: “we have resourceful academic and non-academic staff that are willing to assist you to become the best in your chosen careers.”
Prof Olatunji-Bello congratulated the students, adding that their choice to enroll into the sandwich degree programme of the university is a clear indication of their believe in the capacity to provide qualitative education for them.
“I want to assure you that you have taken a decision that you will never regret.
She added that the university has the capacity to give them worthwhile educational experience that will ensure they have the opportunity to excel in their course of study.
“I also commend your parents and guardians, family members and well-wishers for their efforts towards ensuring that you fulfill your dreams of having qualitative education.
“It is important for me to mention that LASU is a student centred university. It is a place for grooming generational leaders.
She however said it is a fact that a university is a place of freedom but at LASU that freedom often comes with equivalent obligations and boundaries.
Urging them to be of good behaviour, Prof Olatunji-Bello said the university has zero tolerance for cultism, examination malpractices, corruption and hooliganism, saying those found culpable will be made to face appropriate disciplinary sanctions.
“Show respect to your colleagues and staff in the university to make your stay successful and productive.
“As you embark on this new chapter in your lives, I encourage you to set goals, stay focused and never lose sight of your dreams. Remember that persistence, dedication and hard work are the keys to success. Embrace challenges that come your way, be open to new ideas and perspective and never stop learning,” she advised.
Director, Lagos State University Directorate of Sandwich Degree Programme, Prof. John Olufemi Adeogun assured the students of same rights and privileges enjoyed by the regular students as the same curriculum is run with bagging of the same certificate without discrimination.
“I therefore encourage you to strive for excellence by carefully apportioning the amount of time you spend on your books, social engagements and workplace tasks.
He added: Let me also bring to your awareness that running sandwich does not in any way limit your academic achievement but enhance your capacity to excel without losing your means of livelihood.”
This according to him is evident in the forthcoming convocation where some students of sandwich degree programme graduated with a First Class, while quite a number of the graduands made Second Class upper among other graduating class,” he disclosed.
