… Considering Reducing Fees For ECOWAS Nationals
The University of Ghana has opened its portal to admit students across the world particularly applicants in West Africa.
This was disclosed at a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday where the university’s representative revealed several benefits that await applicants in the new admission year especially students from Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists at the press briefing, the Ghana Consul-General, Hajia Samata Gifty Bukari commended the cooperation and understanding between the two countries saying Nigeria had played a significant role in the achievements of the over 75 years university.

“That is why we are giving priority to Nigerian applicants with different benefits if they come to our university to study.”
She added that this year, University of Ghana has opened its portal to admit Africans all over the world including Nigeria, “in fact our priority is to applicants in the West African region especially Nigeria.
“Following the release of WASSCE results and our students are anxious to get into tertiary institutions. We expect that there will be students waiting here for the University of Ghana and other universities all over the world and in order for them to make appropriate and right choices the university’s representatives are here to take them through.
Listing the benefits, the Consul-General disclosed that the university is considering reducing the fees for ECOWAS member countries this year because with the interaction with parents and students, payment of fees is the major problem affecting them not to attend the University of Ghana.
“We found out that it is fee that is sometimes make most of them not to be able to attend university of Ghana. So they have reduced the fees in order that we get more Africans into the university.
“Also to make it easier for parents and students, there is an arrangement for payment in installments, whereby you do a deposit and then the arrangement is done as at when it’s good for parents, by then there is a limit to when you should be able to pay everything,” she explained.
She however added that the arrangements must be taking serious and whatever it’s on paper they must go by it in order not to feel disappointed at the end.
“So, whatever arrangement they make towards their payment by instalment should be followed strictly.”
Hajia Gifty Bukari said the university has qualified lecturers and quality infrastructures which will give value for money paid by parents.
“Accommodation is also provided, security well assured, security now in the West African region is not as expected, however, the university is working on it and has worked on it. It provides the needed security for students in their hostels so that we don’t have any bad news.
“Applicants are giving all the needed assistance from the first day of applying for a course to arrival in Ghana. There is even a pick up from the Airport if they are coming by air and if by road other arrangements have been made once the contact is established,” she explained.
Assuring applicants of support from the Consulate, Mrs Bukari said applicants can always contact the Ghana Embassy; the Ghana Consulate in Lagos and the High Commission in Abuja for any form of assistance.
“The University of Ghana is celebrating the 75th anniversary and we use this opportunity to acknowledge the role Nigeria and Nigerian students, researchers and academics have played in the achievements of over 75 years of delivering education and research.
“In this regard we acknowledged all past students of University of Ghana who are currently working or living in Nigeria.”
Also speaking at the event, the Recruitment Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Yaw Dankwa said the university team are on ground between August 13th and August 23, 2023 to help interested applicants and to further help them even after this time.
Giving the reasons why they should study at the University of Ghana, Mr Dankwa said they are billed to obtain quality qualifications from the best university in West Africa on graduation through their high quality teaching faculties.
“We nurture the next work-ready graduates and postgraduates; Alumni in reputable industries across the world, which gives us industry-edge and links and we provide and expose our students to global perspectives and experiences,” he explained.
He added that the university has various courses listed under College of humanities; College of Basic and Applied Sciences; College of Health Sciences; College of Education and vibrant post graduate programmes.
Dankwa said the challenge is the same all over the world because globally the international students’ numbers have reduced significantly over the past five years all over the world, with COVID-19, with economic hardship, with other forms of disasters, but despite this, Ghana has good number of international students and out of this number majority of these, I will say over 60 percent are from Nigeria especially in our university, we have majority of our foreign students coming from Nigeria.
He urged applicants to make use of the opportunities especially the fee reduction and the instalment payment been giving by the university to celebrate its 75th anniversary.
Some Nigerian students who spoke during the interaction commended the University of Ghana for the provision of things that have made them comfortable in their various faculties and departments.
Max Udochukwu, a 100 level student of Political Science said the experience was impressive and the university is providing everything to make them comfortable.
Utomi Agatha, a Master student in Public Health said the teaching technique is unique and was grateful for the opportunity.
Michael Makia Nije a 100 level student of Biological Science said the environment especially the lectures halls are arranged in a way every student is comfortable and can have access to the teaching wherever they are seated.
The University of Ghana is a public university located in Accra, Ghana. It is the oldest and largest of the thirteen Ghanaian national public universities. The university was founded in 1948 as the University College of the Gold Coast in the British colony of the Gold Coast.
