The Lagos State University Directorate of Advancement (LASUDA) has fulfilled another fundamental aspect of their thrusts: image building and community service, during the second Educational Outreach with eleven schools in the Lagos Island Education District 3, Lagos.
The outreach themed “CATCH THEM EARLY” took place at the Dolphin Senior High School, Sura, Lagos Island, Lagos, on Wednesday, 20th November, 2024.
The Tutor General, Lagos Island Education District 3, Dr. Mrs. Idowu Oyetola in her welcome address, delivered by the Principal, Dolphin Senior High School, Mrs. Comfort Idowu Agunkejika, expressed her appreciation and contentment towards the initiative while encouraging the students to take advantage of the outreach, with keen interest, as it will help shaping their futures, respectively.

The Director, LASUDA, Professor Rafiu Okuneye, in his opening remarks, noted that LASUDA had in the past hosted medical outreach in different locations across the state, with thousands of Lagos residents benefitting from it but this time, the focus, was on education, especially senior students of secondary schools in Lagos state.
He thanked the Honourable for Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Lagos State, Mr Jamiu Alli-Balogun, for approving access to schools, after the amiable Vice Chancellor, LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, graciously approved the Educational Outreach initiative, due to her love for humanities and well-being; her citation legacy since 2016.
He enjoined the students to take advantage of the outreach based on the wealth of experience of resource persons present, who are eager to educate them on the best route to the hallmark of fame and success.
The first speaker, Dr. Oluwafunmilayo Ometan, in her paper “Distraction; The Purpose Killer”, advised the young senior secondary school students to shun distraction which could have negative effect on their studies, as well as great consequence in the future.
She admonished them to avoid distractive tendencies in the use electronic gadgets, (such as phones and computer systems), and in opposite genders.
Assistant Director, LASUDA, Dr Aminat Ige-Ariyibi, spoke on “The Glory Attached to University Education”. The award winning scholar of Mathematics thrilled the young adults by coming to their level in enlightening them on the importance of university education and their future successes.
She explained the avenues to leverage on in order to succeed in life, with the emerging technologies as well as the world of the Internet.
Dr Ige-Ariyibi enjoined the students to embrace models, who would act as mentors in their various chosen careers, which ultimately would be of great impact to them. Finally, she warned them on the dangers of social media, but, urged them to use it positively.
“Football and Students’ Life: The Semblance” was well delivered by the Chairman, LASU Sports and Recreation Centre Board, Prof. Simeon Dosunmu, as he was more inspirational in his approach, using ‘the game of football’ to drive home his points.
The Professor of Educational Foundation inspired the participants with tips and steps by step model to the peak of the ladder of academic success through inspirational quotes on flexibility, dedication and being focused.
These included, “Football rules plays out in schools as well. Spectators will either cheer or jeer you at the end of the 90 minutes game, so choose which you will prefer”,
The Acting Director, Centre for Response and Prevention of Sexual and Gender Based Violence, Dr Igot B. Ofem, in her presentation, “Sexuality: What Senior Secondary School Students Should Know and Do”, she educated the young adults on Managing their sexuality, speaking up when needs arises, dealing with and overcoming the challenges of sexuality and its negativities.
The event had in attendance students from the following schools: Dolphin Senior High School, Oke Suna Senior High School, Ebute – Elefun Senior School, Eko-Akete Senior Grammar School, Epetedo Senior High School, Boys Senior Academy, Girls Senior Academy, King Ado Senior High School, Lafiaji Senior High School, Isale-Eko Senior High School, and Elegbata Senior High School.
The well attended event ended with closing remarks from the Principal, Dolphin Senior High School, Mrs Agunkejika and a vote of thanks by the Head Girl, Dolphin Senior High School, Miss Isiwat Kadiri.
Administrative staff of LASUDA, LASU Alumni Unit, CRPSGBV and teachers from the participating schools were equally in attendance.
It should be recall that the first Educational Outreach took place at Agboju Education District 5, in Lagos State Model College, Ojo, Lagos, on Wednesday, 9th October, 2024.
