The Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has said that with the total of 282 First class graduands in the two academic sessions, the University is graduating her highest number of first class in her 40 years of existence.
She stated this at the 26th convocation ceremony of the university for the award of Diplomas, First degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s degrees, held on Wednesday at the institution.
According to her, a total number of 10,183 graduands have been found worthy in character and learning for the award of various categories of degrees and diplomas of the University at the Convocation Ceremonies.
“These graduands have performed exceedingly well in their various disciplines. Some of the outstanding graduands will receive various prize awards.

“For the First degree Programmes, we have a total of 282 First class graduands, 3,375 Second class Upper Division, 5,311 Second class Lower Division, 1,105 Third Class, 36 Pass and 74 Non Classified Degrees for (MBBS & BDS) which make a total of 10,183 graduands for the combined 2020/2021 & 2021/2022 Academic sessions.
“For Postgraduate Programmes, we have 451 Postgraduate Diplomas, 475 Academic Masters, 557 Professional Masters, 115 Doctor of Philosophy and 6 Professional Doctoral Degrees which make a total of 1604 graduands.”
Prof. Olatunji-Bello explained further that for the 2020/2021 Academic session, 148 graduated with First Class, “for the 2021/2022 Academic session, we have 128 First Class graduands; while for Sandwich Degree programme for 2022 Modular Year, we have 6 graduands which make a total of 282 First Class graduands for the two Academic sessions.”
She continued: “I am happy to inform you that we have continued to expand the frontiers of academic excellence by equipping our graduands with practical knowledge and technical knowhow that will be useful to them outside the four walls of the University.
“Given the success that the University has recorded in all fronts in the last one year, it is not immodest to claim that LASU is one of the most competitive Universities in Nigeria today.
“For instance, in the just concluded 2022/2023 admission exercise, Lagos State University was one of the most subscribed Universities in Nigeria with over forty-thousand (40,000) applications by those with 185 JAMB scores and above.
“This explains how highly valued our great Institution has become, not only in Nigeria but worldwide. We will not rest on our laurels but will continue to deepen academic excellence as we make progress towards becoming the best University in West Africa,” she added.
Congratulating the graduating students, the VC disclosed that for the 2020/2021 Academic Session, LOPEZ Feyisayo Divine, Department of Physiology, Lagos State University College of Medicine has a CGPA of 4.91, while in the 2021/2022 Academic Session, YUSUF Aminat Imoitesemeh of Faculty of Law, graduated with a perfect CGPA of 5.00.
“I am also glad to announce that YUSUF Aminat Imoitesemeh, with a perfect CGPA of 5.00 is LASU’s Best Graduating student in history. I congratulate her, her family and the Faculty of Law on this laudable feat.
“My dear graduands, as you graduate today, our expectation is that you will go out there and contribute your quota in proffering solutions to the myriads of problems confronting our world. We live in a world desperate for solution providers. As you know, all spheres of human society are plagued by seemingly intractable crises begging for answers.
In the face of daunting economic and social challenges in the health, security, power, education, transportation and manufacturing sectors, you have an opportunity to make a difference. Nigeria is in need of skilled professionals that can be of help to actualizing and promoting her economic prosperity. You are the answers that our nation needs.”
She continued: “My dear graduands, I urge you to stand out and be different; don’t be swayed by the appeal of immediate gratification; train your mouth to say NO to invitation that would short-change the system for immediate or pecuniary gains, and your hands to embrace hard work and honest labour.
“Indeed, honesty remains the best policy and there is great reward for diligence. Nature pays diligence. Measure your success by how much you evolve, not necessarily how much you win. It is ok not to win all the time; what is not ok is to lose and never try again.
“Thankfully, LASU has trained you not just to be great professionals but to be fantastic individuals. I am confident that you have prepared for the challenges ahead and I urge you to be good ambassadors of our dear University in the wider society, having been found worthy both in learning and in character. I wish you all the best in your future endeavours,” she said.
