… Overall Best Graduating Student Get N10million
The Lagos State University, Ojo has conferred seven eminent Nigerians with honorary Doctorates, an appreciation award and a posthumous recognition at the institution’s 26th convocation and 40th anniversary ceremony held on Thursday.
The institution also honoured two academics with exclusive rank of Distinguished Professor of the institution alongside the award of Doctoral Degrees (Ph.D) on the graduands at the ceremony.
The Honorary Awardees are His Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, he was awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (Urban and Rural Community Development and Youth Empowerment), Dr. John Olukayode Fayemi, was awarded Honorary Doctor of Letters (Human Rights, National Integration and African Security Development) and Hon. Olufemi Hakeem Gbajabiamila, was awarded Honorary Doctor of Law (Education, Community and National Development).

Others are: “Dr. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu was awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (Child Healthcare, Environmental Development and Women Empowerment), HRM. Oba Alayeluwa Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Kusenla III, was awarded Honorary Doctor of Arts (Broadcasting, Community Integration and Human Rights Advocate), Prof. Daniel Kolawole Olukoya got Honorary Doctor of Science (Genetics and Biotechnology), while HRM. Oba (Dr) Sulaiman Adeshina Raji, Ashade 1 was awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (Grassroots Development).
Also, appreciation award was given to Her Excellency, Princess Victoria Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, for her consistent support and contributions to the development of physical infrastructure of the university while a posthumous award was given to the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the university, the Late Prof. Folabi Olumide, who nurtured the university from cradle and laid a solid foundation, which the institution is building on today.
Furthermore, the Senate of the university also conferred the title of Distinguished Professor on Professor Dapo Folorunsho Asaju of the Department of Religions and Peace Studies and Professor Babajide Olufemi Elemo of the Department of Biochemistry.
In her welcome address, the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello congratulated the awardees adding that the illustrious personalities was found worthy by the Senate of the university as a result of their contributions to the growth and development of the institution and the society.
“It is important to state that the choice of both academics was after a rigorous scrutiny from amongst equally deserving individuals is a confirmation of their sacrifice, personal integrity, and service to the nation and humanity as a whole.”
She stated that the ceremony does not just wrap up the 26th Convocation, it is also a symbolic occasion of fulfilment and pride for the students who have been found worthy in character and learning to be conferred with the highest academic degree of the great university.
“At 40 years, following the establishment of the university in 1983 by an enabling law of Lagos State under the administration of the first Civilian Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, I believe the university has made its mark and has a lot to be grateful for.
“Regardless of the challenges of the past, LASU has fulfilled the vision of its founding fathers to provide Lagos State with the required human capital helping in the strategic transformation of the industrial capacity of the State in particular and the country in general.
“It stands to reason that LASU’s contribution to the training of qualified manpower continues to inspire thousands of young graduates who are shaping the industry and adding great value to the nation.
“Having said that, I will like to express my sincere gratitude to every single person who has contributed in one way or the other to the success story of this university today,” she added.
Thanking the Governor for his immeasurable and invaluable contributions to the growth and development of our University, the VC said, “I do not take for granted the support of the students’ union and all staff unions in the University. Their constructive approach to issues has sustained industrial peace and harmony and stabilised the academic calendar in the last 21 months and I thank the University’s benefactors for their commitment to LASU’s progress.
“To the graduands of today, I congratulate you once again and wish you the best in your future endeavours,” she said.
The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu in in his speech at the ceremony commended the commitment and diligence of the management of the institution from the first Vice-Chancellor till date for their resilience and hard work.
Congratulating the Overall Best Graduating Student, Miss Aminat Imoitesemeh Yusuf of Faculty of Law, with a perfect CGPA of 5.00 in history of the institution for her outstanding performance, the Governor gave her N10million, N5million from his personal account and the other N5million from the state government.
He also promised to award the overall best graduating student, 2020/2021 Academic Session, LOPEZ Feyisayo Divine, with a CGPA of 4.91, Department of Physiology, Lagos State University College of Medicine.
