The GSM Association (GSMA), one of the most prominent global organisations in telecommunications, has appointed MTN Group President CEO Ralph Mupita as deputy chair of its board.
He will hold the spot on the board for the remainder of the board term, which ends in 2026. He will support the chair and board in overseeing the organisation’s strategic direction.
“This appointment is a great honour as it comes at a time of rapid developments in technology and increasing digital adoption across Africa,” says Mupita.
“Mobile technology will play a critical part in addressing the pressing challenges facing our communities and unlocking the full potential of Africa and the rest of the Global South, ensuring that no one is left behind in this journey toward a more connected future.”

He added that he is committed to supporting the GSMA’s strategic direction, adding that the organisation plays a critical role in representing the global mobile ecosystem.
“Together, we will continue to drive innovation and positive change in the industry,” said Mupita.
The GMSA’s Director General, Vivek Badrinath, congratulated Mupita on his election for the role.
“His experience will be invaluable as we continue to navigate the dynamic landscape of our industry. I look forward to working closely with him and the board,” said Badrinath.
Mupita has been the President and CEO of MTN Group since September 2020, before which he served as the company’s CFO from April 2017.
Before joining MTN, Mupita was CEO of Old Mutual Emerging Markets. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Engineering and an MBA from the University of Cape Town.
He has also completed the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.
