Faculty of Engineering, University of Lagos shines at the 54th convocation held on Wednesday by producing the best graduating student.
The student, David Oluwatomiwa Akanmu with a perfect score of 5.00 from the Faculty of Engineering emerged overall best graduating student and also the best graduating student in the sciences.
The Faculty of Management Sciences came second with Ibrahim Abiodun Quadri with CGPA 4.94 as the best graduating students in Humanities.
For the feat as the best graduating student, David Akanmu went home with several awards and N1million from Sahara Group for his outstanding performance.

Giving the statistics of the graduating students at the ceremony, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola said 10,570 students from all Faculties and the Distance Learning Institute (DLI) were admitted to first degrees and diplomas in their various disciplines.
She added that of these 340 (3.2%) obtained first class degrees with 97 coming from management sciences, followed by Sciences with 57 and Engineering 47.
“There were 39 distinctions, 15% of the 250 students with unclassified degrees from the Faculties of Pharmacy, Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Sciences, in Medicine, Pharmacy and Medical Laboratory Sciences, 24 of which were from Faculty of Pharmacy.
“3,374 graduated with Second class upper, 4547 graduated with Second class lower and 1,832 with 3rd class,” she stated.
Congratulating the graduating students, the VC commended them for their diligence, resilience and the hard work they put into completing their respective programmes.
“You have been trained and tutored and found worthy in character and learning for you to be celebrated and honoured here, today. I congratulate your family and friends who encouraged and supported you along the way.
“You are the solution that we need, therefore go out into the world and remember that everything you do is a building block of your life and will determine who you become,” she said.
Prof. Ogunsola used the opportunity to thanked members of Senate, staff and all stakeholders for their commitment and loyalty to UNILAG during national economic difficulties of 2023.
She however said the university was able to record many significant wins especially in the quality and quantum of research and grants, improved collaborations and partnerships with their universities and industry within and outside Nigeria, as well as, exchange programmes for staff and students.
“In pursuance of the FUTURE READY AGENDA, we have made firm strides in growing our finances, infrastructure, reputation and manpower and the last year was one of consolidation seed sowing and growth.”
She also thanked the donors for their support to the university, adding that recently the Chief of Staff of the president of Nigeria, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila donated a 484 bed space hostel to the university.
“We appreciate his previous support for internet services on campus and his donations to our affiliate hospital LUTH which will benefit the training of Medical and Health professionals.
“We also received donations from various groups in kind and in cash, Havillah Group publishing company donated books worth N20, 000,000.00; Total Energies also donated laboratory and fieldwork equipment for training Geoscience students.
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) endowed a professorial chair worth N30, 000,000.00 among others.”
The VC also thanked various individuals and companies that donated money to support the indigent students adding that a total of 1329 students have benefitted from various support programmes.
