The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi has emphasized on the Inter-linkages between human health, coastal ecosystem health and ocean health.
Due to this interlink, he said researchers in academia, corporate and private research -focused organisations need to delve more into critical human-impacting research and ensure that their findings are published to help the government in formulating policies for the benefit of humanity.
He disclosed this while delivering the keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 3-day workshop themed; ‘Harnessing the Blue and Marine Economy in Support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development’ hosted by Lagos State University Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSED), in partnership with Centre for Sargassum Research (CESAR) and Lagos State University Centre for Actualisation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (LASU-SDGs), recently.
The medical expert reputed for his astute management of global and domestic health crises such as the COVID-19, Cholera and the current globally ravaging Monkeypox, posited that: “Researchers should not bind up their findings as mere academic books and keep them in the shelves.

“Such findings should be shared with the government for implication partnerships towards finding solutions to human challenges”.
Talking about health and the environment, Abayomi tutored the audience that the human being is a totality of his economic, psychological, physical and environmental wellbeing wherein the absence or inadequacy of one of the several components affects the others.
“When we think about ourselves as human beings, what we think about is our health but beyond that, our financial situation affects our psychological state,” he stated.
