The Vice-Chancellor, Lagos State University, Ojo, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello has disclosed the willingness of the institution to partner with the Alumni and other stakeholders to achieve the vision of LASU becoming the Best University in West Africa within the next two years.
She stated this on Monday at the Coconut Breaking festival, part of activities marking the 27th Convocation Ceremonies of the university.
According to her, the vision is attainable because the university is on the right path but need more visible support of all Alumni and stakeholders.
“As an Association, you are supposed to participate actively in the institution’s developments that will bring monumental growth to your Alma mater,” she said.

She disclosed further that many landmark projects have been commissioned since her assumption as the Vice Chancellor of the University adding; “I wish to further implore the Alumni Association to use its goodwill to attract further development to LASU through facilitation or construction of Independent Power Plant, large lecture halls, Ultra-modern CBT centres and provision of security gadgets, amongst other things which would facilitate the attainment of the Strategic goals of the University.”
On the significance of the Coconut breaking ceremony, Prof. Olatunji-Bello said Coconut Breaking ceremony, which is an entrenched tradition and culture in LASU is symbolic and it presents an opportunity to offer prayers for the general well-being of the institution, staff, students, Lagos State and other stakeholders.
She added that it showcases the rich cultural heritage that is peculiar to LASU and Lagos State; and also promotes unity, peace and development of the University.
She disclosed that the use of coconut for prayer is rooted in the history of the state of aquatic splendor and excellence, since it abounds in all the nooks and crannies of the state.
“The coconut breaking festival promotes mutual understanding, cooperation and a sense of oneness in the University. This is why this symbolic activity, should be celebrated by all members of our University community,” she said.
The VC commended the President, Lagos State University Alumni Association, Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.) and members of the Executive Committee of the Association for upholding the tradition of sponsoring and organizing the event.
The President, LASU Alumni, Major General Cecil Esekhaigbe (Rtd.) in his remarks congratulated the management of the institution for another milestone and another accomplishment of this year’s graduation ceremony which commenced with the Coconut breaking ceremony.
The Alumni President, represented by Prof. Olugbenga Oladimeji explained that the coconut breaking ceremony symbolizes the act of presenting the breaking, “Just as the coconut is cracked open to reveal its richness within; so too do we all as alumni carry within us a wealth of knowledge, experience and connection forged during our time together and which we’re learning to the new graduates.
“As we break this coconut, we remember the memories we have made, the challenges we have overcome and the bonds we have formed.
“We honour the past, celebrate the present and look forward to a bright future. Let us embrace the spirit of this ceremony, just as we embrace our time together. Let us continue to support each other to lift each other up and to make a positive impact in the world.
“Together, let us break open new possibilities, just as we break open this coconut at this ceremony today. We wish you the graduating set a successful celebration and trusting God for your accomplishments in the years to come, so you can be able to pay back to your Alma mater.”
The ceremony was marked with breaking of coconuts and prayers for the university with the Vice-Chancellor and other management staff taking the lead.
