The Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Bishop Mike Okonkwo has said there is the need to put in place political structure that will help reform Nigeria as well as improve governance in the country.
In a media parley at the TREM headquarters in Lagos on Monday ahead of his 80th birthday in September, Bishop Okonkwo also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to leave a legacy that will put an end to the shanighans that is ongoing in Nigeria’s politics.
“Reform the country, put things in place where anyone in this country can aspire for any office, put the country in a position where no region will hold any one to ransom and the structure is there for anyone that wants to go for any political post.”
Bishop Okonkwo added that if the President can achieve the political structure as well as total reform of the country posterity will not forget him, they will remember him as that man who was bold to tear down all those things that has been retrogressive to the progress of the country.

The Bishop who lamented the uncare attitude of politicians in the country also added that preparing for 2027 election at this time is a misplaced priority as it is out of place for elected leaders to start thinking of reelection rather than governance.
“Our political leaders don’t need any of these political drama or manipulation and stressing people about re-election because what Nigerians need is for them to perform as well as provide a level playing ground for citizens to strive.”
Speaking on the mindset of youths towards the future of the country, Bishop Okonkwo said youths already has negative mindset as a result of how leaders in the country handled governance which is detrimental to the development of country.
He said leaders need to understand that they are sowing seeds that will germinate in future, adding that if they think legacy, there are things leaders will not do.
He however said the only way to change the minds of youths is through God because human beings has failed them and that is why the church has a lot of responsibilities to ensure that whatever is needed to change their mindset is set in motion “because if they follow the example they are seeing it may affect the future of the nation.”
While speaking on Nigeria being at a verge of one party state , the Bishop said Nigeria is too multifaceted for one party system, adding that it cannot work for Nigeria especially now that people has access to information.
On the Benue killing, he urged the government to act fast before it is too late. “In developed country this will occupy a front burner in their parliament and every other thing will be secondary until there is solution.
“Anything affecting the masses, their National Assembly or congress will be shut down until they find solution but here we don’t care because some politicians are all out for the money.
“That is why I said our politics requires a drastic structuring and it is not about individual or party, it requires a drastic surgery and I pray God will give us a leader that will perform the surgery for us,” he said.
